Voestalpine lands €500M rail deals with Deutsche Bahn and SBB

Voestalpine has secured two major rail contracts worth nearly €500 million with Deutsche Bahn and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The deals mark a significant expansion of the company's role in Europe's rail infrastructure. Both projects will involve supplying premium rails, signaling technology, and modernisation systems over the coming years.

Under the agreements, Voestalpine will provide essential components for Deutsche Bahn's infrastructure upgrades. The German rail operator plans to invest over €23 billion in 2026 alone, with Voestalpine supplying rails, switch parts, and advanced signaling systems. These upgrades aim to improve efficiency and capacity across key routes.

A separate 20-year framework deal with SBB will see Voestalpine deliver axle-counting systems for Switzerland's rail network. The technology enhances safety and operational control, supporting SBB's long-term modernisation strategy.

Beyond these contracts, Voestalpine has steadily built its presence in rail and signaling technology. Recent projects include modernising Central European rail infrastructure and contributing to high-speed rail corridors. The company's logistics arm, CargoServ, also plays a key role by transporting around 1.8 million tons of iron ore annually from the Erzberg mine to Linz using specialised containers.

The new contracts could help stabilise Voestalpine's market position, as its share price currently sits around 19% below its 52-week high. With Deutsche Bahn and SBB committing to large-scale upgrades, the company's rail division is set to play a central role in Europe's infrastructure development. Deliveries and installations will roll out over the next two decades under the agreed terms.
