Veer Savarkar flyover spared as IIT Bombay approves new link road design
The Veer Savarkar flyover in Goregaon will no longer face demolition. On 24 January 2026, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay approved revised designs using monopile technology to integrate the structure into the upcoming Versova–Dahisar Link Road project. The decision follows months of public opposition and technical reviews.
The seven-year-old flyover serves as a key east-west link between the Western Express Highway and Rustomjee Ozone. When plans for the Versova–Dahisar Link Road initially proposed its demolition, residents, local leaders, and BJP MLA Vidya Thakur raised strong objections.
An expert team from IIT Bombay conducted an on-site inspection and suggested design refinements. The contractor then revised the drawings to incorporate monopile technology, preserving the existing structure. After a detailed review, IIT Bombay gave final approval for the updated plans on 24 January 2026.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed the flyover will remain intact. By using monopile technology, the structure will now form part of the Versova–Dahisar Link Road without requiring demolition. The decision avoids disruption for commuters and retains a vital transport link in the area.
