Unsecured wardrobe injures child at Russian rehabilitation center
A child was injured at the Big Taraskul Rehabilitation Center in Labytnangi after a freestanding wardrobe toppled onto him. The incident led to legal action, with the city prosecutor's office stepping in to seek compensation for the harm caused.
The accident occurred when an unsecured wardrobe fell over, striking the child. He suffered bruising to his elbow, shoulder, and nose as a result. His younger brother, who witnessed the event, later showed signs of psychological distress, including heightened anxiety.
An investigation revealed that the wardrobe had not been fixed to the wall, violating safety standards. The Labytnangi city prosecutor's office filed a lawsuit, arguing for compensation due to moral damages. The court ruled in favour of the children, awarding them a total of 80,000 rubles. The prosecutor's office is now monitoring the enforcement of the decision. Records also indicate no similar incidents involving overturned furniture in Russian children's rehabilitation centres have been publicly reported in the past five years.
The compensation order follows a court ruling that recognised both physical and psychological harm. The case highlights the importance of securing furniture in facilities caring for children. Authorities will ensure the payment is made as directed.
