Unprecedented prison riot erupts as 32 inmates seize control in Fribourg
A violent uprising broke out at Bellechasse Prison in Fribourg on Monday evening. Dozens of inmates clashed with guards, destroyed property, and refused to return to their cells. Authorities later described the incident as unprecedented in its scale and aggression.
The riot began when 32 prisoners barricaded themselves inside a section of the high-security wing. They protested against prison conditions, including expensive phone calls, overpriced canteen food, and strict visiting rules. Inmates directed extreme aggression toward guards, vandalised facilities, and issued threats.
Prison staff and police reinforcements were called in to regain control. After three hours of confrontation, order was restored, and the prisoners were forced back to their cells.
Didier Page, deputy secretary-general of the Directorate of Justice, Security, and Sport, later stated that the level of violence and defiance was unlike anything seen before in the facility.
The uprising ended with all inmates returning to their cells after a prolonged standoff. Swiss authorities have confirmed the involvement of 32 prisoners in the unrest. The incident has raised concerns about tensions over living conditions inside Bellechasse Prison.
