University of Sonora resumes classes after 19-day strike ends in vote
Academic and administrative activities at the University of Sonora are set to resume after a 19-day strike ended with a majority vote. Workers accepted a proposal from university administrators, bringing an end to the disruption. Meanwhile, another union has warned of further action if negotiations fail to progress.
The Union of Workers and Employees of the University of Sonora (STEUS) confirmed the decision, while the Union of Academic Workers (Staus) staged a protest to highlight stalled salary talks. The strike by STEUS began nearly three weeks ago, halting in-person classes and administrative work. On Sunday, members voted to accept the university’s latest offer, with 919 in favour and 476 against. The result allows the institution to restart operations and adjust the academic calendar.
University officials will soon announce revised dates for the end of the semester, grade submissions, and re-enrolment. The grade-entry system for the 2026-1 term will also stay open for students needing records for mobility or postgraduate applications.
While STEUS returns to work, Staus continues its push for better pay. Members held a symbolic demonstration at Cerro de la Campana, led by General Secretary Cuauhtémoc Nieblas Cota. He stressed the union’s willingness to negotiate but warned of a possible strike from May 14 if no agreement is reached.
Staus insists it remains open to dialogue and aims to avoid further disruptions. The union’s focus is on securing fair terms for academic staff before the proposed strike date. The University of Sonora now moves to restore normal activities, with updated schedules expected shortly. STEUS has ended its strike, but Staus still seeks progress in salary talks to prevent another walkout. Official announcements on deadlines and procedures will be shared through the university’s channels.
