UK's £800M MESH energy hub gains national significance on Lancashire coast

The UK’s Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero has designated the MESH project as nationally significant. This £800 million offshore hub on the Lancashire coast aims to combine energy storage, gas, and green hydrogen production in one facility. The scheme is currently in its pre-FEED stage, with financing and stakeholder alignment still required before a final investment decision can be made. Max Williams, CFO of EnergyPathways, has secured a financing agreement with a global institutional investor to fund MESH’s pre-FEED work. He emphasises that a strong, multidisciplinary team is essential for the project’s success. His leadership has also ensured reliable equity shareholder support, helping push the initiative forward.

The MESH project is designed to reduce reliance on government subsidies while creating local jobs. It integrates long-duration energy storage, gas infrastructure, and green hydrogen production into a single system. EnergyPathways already uses AI for accounting and energy management, with plans to expand its role as the company grows. Williams advises aspiring CFOs to prioritise transparency with investors and stakeholders. His approach has been key in maintaining momentum for MESH, even as it navigates early-stage challenges.

With national recognition and early funding in place, MESH now requires further capital and stakeholder coordination to reach a final investment decision. If successful, the project could reshape energy infrastructure on the Lancashire coast while supporting regional employment. The next phase will determine whether the hub progresses from planning to construction.
