UK MoD seeks cutting-edge loitering munitions with 60km strike range
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has launched a new Request for Information (RFI) for its Medium Range Precision Strike loitering munition programme. Issued on 18 May 2026, the move invites potential suppliers to weigh in on the project’s requirements and delivery strategies before any formal procurement begins. The RFI outlines strict technical demands for the munition. It must be portable across land, air, and sea platforms, with a minimum range of 60km and a loitering capability of at least 40 minutes. The system should also engage diverse targets, from armoured vehicles to fast inshore attack craft, while providing real-time video for identification. Resilience in contested, GPS-denied environments and the ability to launch from both land and maritime surfaces are additional requirements.
Suppliers have until 5 June 2026 to respond, with a formal tender notice anticipated by 31 July 2026. This latest RFI builds on earlier market engagement carried out in 2024 and 2025. The MoD has not yet committed to a full procurement and may adjust its plans before moving forward. If approved, the contract is expected to start in June 2028 and run until June 2031. The programme aims to acquire at least 200 munitions, with an estimated total value of £120 million.
The RFI marks a key step in the MoD’s efforts to modernise its precision strike capabilities. Responses from industry will shape the project’s next phase, with a formal tender process potentially launching later this summer. The programme’s timeline and budget remain subject to further review before any final decisions are made.
