A Renault truck was stopped at the Ayat border crossing while attempting to enter Russia. Authorities declared the vehicle empty, yet a hidden cargo of non-ferrous metal waste and brass radiators was discovered inside.

The truck, declared as empty, was found carrying 3,770 kilograms of concealed metal. The cargo included brass radiators and other non-ferrous waste, hidden in a secret compartment. Investigators revealed that structural changes had been made to the vehicle—an extra space was welded into the front of the tanker to hide the materials.

The smuggled goods were valued at around 15 million tenge, equivalent to roughly $32,000. This incident follows a broader crackdown on scrap metal smuggling into Russia over the past two years. Between 2024 and 2026, the EU and US tightened controls, introducing stricter customs checks, sanctions monitoring, and prosecutions.

The EU expanded its 2022/1271 regulation in 2024, while the US Treasury imposed sanctions on networks involved in smuggling through Turkey and Kazakhstan. Arrests linked to similar cases have already occurred in Finland and Lithuania.

The discovery at Ayat highlights ongoing efforts to prevent illegal metal exports to Russia. Stricter enforcement measures have led to multiple seizures and prosecutions across Europe. The hidden cargo's value and method of concealment suggest organized smuggling operations remain active.
