Trains Win as the Greenest Way to Travel Between Vienna and Hamburg

A new analysis compares the carbon footprint of different travel options between Vienna and Hamburg. The study highlights how transport choices and accommodation impact a trip’s environmental effect. It also explains how carbon calculators measure emissions. The train route spans 1,237 km one way, passing through Austria and Germany. For a round trip, trains emit the least CO₂ at 0.054 metric tons CO₂e. Long-distance buses produce 0.095 metric tons CO₂e for the same journey.

A solo trip by combustion-engine car releases 0.440 metric tons CO₂e, while an electric car emits 0.206 metric tons. Flying remains the most polluting option, with emissions of 0.435 metric tons CO₂e. This is roughly the same as driving alone by car. The train’s emissions are about one-eighth those of flying or solo driving. The study confirms that trains are the most climate-friendly choice for this route. It also stresses that carbon offsetting should supplement, not justify, high-emission travel. Accommodation decisions further influence the overall ecological impact of a trip.
