Three industry giants unite to revolutionize carbon capture transport

Three major firms have joined forces to advance carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), Chiyoda Corporation, and Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on CO₂ transport projects. Their partnership aims to speed up the deployment of CCS infrastructure through shared expertise in engineering, shipping, and project development. The agreement builds on earlier joint work carried out in 2024. During that phase, the companies evaluated different configurations for shipping liquefied CO₂. Their findings were later presented at a technical seminar hosted by the Global CCS Institute.

A key focus of the new collaboration is optimising the transport of liquefied CO₂. The partners will explore opportunities across all project stages, from initial concept design and feasibility studies to detailed engineering and construction. They also plan to develop tailored solutions for individual CCS projects, addressing both technical and economic challenges throughout the value chain. The partnership further aims to standardise approaches and improve the financial viability of CCS projects. Shipping is expected to become more critical for cross-border carbon management, especially in regions lacking pipeline infrastructure. The collaboration reflects a growing industry trend where project success depends on coordination between capture, transport, and storage components.

The combined efforts of NYK, Chiyoda Corporation, and Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers could help accelerate the rollout of CCS technology. By leveraging their expertise, the companies intend to create more efficient and economically feasible solutions for CO₂ transport. The initiative aligns with broader industry moves to strengthen cross-border carbon management systems.
