Swiss investors embrace ETF savings plans for effortless stock market growth
ETF savings plans are growing in popularity among Swiss investors, providing a simple way to invest in the stock market today. These plans allow individuals to invest fixed amounts regularly in exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which passively track market benchmarks like the MSCI World. With over 1,500 ETFs available in Switzerland and a rising share of new investments flowing into them, more investors are turning to this approach for long-term wealth building.
By February 2026, at least eight Swiss brokers now offer free ETF savings plans with no annual custody fees. This trend reflects broader interest, as nearly half of Swiss investors are expected to invest in ETFs over the next two years.
An ETF savings plan works by automatically investing a set sum at regular intervals into one or more ETFs. This method provides broad diversification, low costs, and the discipline of automated investing. It also removes the need to pick individual stocks, making it easier for beginners to enter the stock market today.
Switzerland currently offers around 1,500 different ETFs, with roughly 8% new ones added each year. While ETFs make up 16% of all retail funds, they hold 26% of total fund assets in the country. Over the past five years, most new investments have gone into ETFs rather than traditional funds.
For investors looking for cost-effective options, brokers like Neon, Postfinance, Saxobank, and Yuh provide free ETF savings plans. Neon, for example, charges nothing for savings plans or custody fees and offers 1,759 free ETF options. Postfinance follows with 333 free plans, while Saxobank and Yuh also waive fees for monthly investments of CHF 200.
However, ETF savings plans come with risks. Market volatility, no guaranteed returns, and varying fees can impact results. Investors must also consider tax implications, psychological challenges, and the fact that ETFs cannot outperform their benchmark. Patience and a long-term perspective are essential, as short-term losses are possible.
ETF savings plans provide a straightforward way to invest in the stock market today with minimal effort. With many Swiss brokers now offering fee-free options, the barrier to entry has lowered. However, investors should weigh the benefits of diversification and automation against the risks of market fluctuations and potential hidden costs. The trend suggests growing adoption, but success depends on careful planning and realistic expectations.
