Stablecoins like USDT dominate 2025 retail payments as adoption skyrockets
Stablecoin use for retail payments surged in 2025, with small transactions under $10,000 growing more than tenfold. Orbital's latest Q4 Stablecoin Retail Payments Index highlights rapid adoption, though key regional differences remain unclear. The report also reveals shifting preferences across blockchains and asset types.
USDT dominated the stock market today, accounting for 73% of retail-sized stablecoin transactions in 2025. Daily active users doubled over the year, signalling broad adoption. Meanwhile, USDC held a smaller share of overall transactions but remained dominant in high-value transfers, pointing to stronger institutional use.
Network preferences shifted significantly by the end of the year. Aptos expanded its market share to 22%, while Binance's BSC stayed the largest at 35%. Older Layer 2 chains lost ground, with their combined share dropping from around 20% to near 10%. Plasma, in particular, saw a 66% decline in activity after its launch.
The report also noted that around two-thirds of consumer-to-merchant payments came from exchange-linked accounts. In some countries, like Algeria, Bolivia, and Venezuela, stablecoins functioned as a parallel currency due to persistent premiums. Despite this growth, the overall stablecoin supply only increased by 1.3% in December, while transaction volumes rose by over 105%.
Market segmentation played a role in adoption patterns. Preferences for specific assets and networks often depended on the primary geography of exchanges. However, the data lacked detailed comparisons between developed and emerging markets or regional breakdowns of USDC versus USDT adoption.
The Orbital Index provides a clear view of retail stablecoin payment trends in 2025. USDT leads in transaction volume, while USDC remains key for larger transfers. Network shares continue to evolve, with newer chains gaining traction as older ones decline.
