South Africa's youth turn to entrepreneurship amid record 45% unemployment
South Africa faces severe economic challenges, with unemployment reaching 31.4 per cent in late 2025. Youth joblessness is even higher, topping 45 per cent. Despite these struggles, innovation and entrepreneurship support programmes are expanding across the country to tackle inequality and create opportunities. The World Bank ranks South Africa among the most unequal societies worldwide. High unemployment and limited access to resources have pushed many towards entrepreneurship, though support remains uneven. Only around 10 to 15 per cent of local entrepreneurship organisations focus specifically on digital startups.
Two major accelerator programmes are currently active. The Future 50 initiative, initially launched in KwaZulu-Natal, has now expanded to Western Cape, North-West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng. Meanwhile, the Google for Startups Accelerator: Africa is accepting applications for its 10th cohort until March 18, 2026. Cape Town stands out as a key hub, hosting multiple funded startups, while KwaZulu-Natal played a pivotal role in Future 50's early growth. RLabs, a long-standing innovation connector since 2009, has partnered with MTN South Africa on a youth digital empowerment programme in the Western Cape. Their work aligns with the Quadruple Helix model, which brings together government, industry, academia, and civil society to drive change. To further strengthen collaboration, SA Innovation Week 2026 will gather policymakers, entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and community leaders. The event aims to address the country's most urgent challenges through shared solutions and innovation.
With unemployment remaining critically high, targeted programmes like Future 50 and RLabs' initiatives offer pathways for young South Africans. The upcoming SA Innovation Week 2026 will provide another platform for stakeholders to work together. These efforts highlight a growing focus on digital skills and entrepreneurship as tools for economic recovery.
