Silicon Motion launches PCIe 5.0 and 6.0 SSD controllers for next-gen storage

Silicon Motion has unveiled two new SSD controllers aimed at enterprise and high-performance storage. The SM8008, built for PCIe 5.0, targets energy-efficient boot drives in data centres. Meanwhile, the upcoming SM8466 promises even faster speeds with PCIe 6.0 support, pushing throughput to 28 GB/s.

The SM8008 is designed for hyperscale and enterprise environments where low power and reliability matter. Built on TSMC's 6-nm process, it consumes under 5 watts while delivering up to 14 GB/s in sequential read speeds and 2.3 million IOPS. Its eight NAND channels make it well-suited for boot SSDs and server workloads where efficiency is key.

ATP and Exascend have already announced plans to adopt the SM8008 in their next SSD lines. Competitors like Phison are also using TSMC's 6-nm node for their PCIe 5.0 controllers, while Micron's Crucial brand relies on Silicon Motion's earlier SM2508, similarly manufactured at 6-nm. Looking ahead, the SM8466 will take performance further by supporting PCIe 6.0. This next-generation controller is expected to double the maximum throughput to 28 GB/s and increase IOPS to 7 million, catering to future high-speed storage demands.

The SM8008 is now available for integration, with manufacturers preparing to launch SSDs based on its design. Its low power draw and high efficiency address the needs of modern data centres. The SM8466, meanwhile, sets the stage for even faster storage solutions once PCIe 6.0 becomes standard.
