Seattle battles 600% surge in leptospirosis cases in early 2026

Seattle has seen a sharp rise in leptospirosis cases this year. From January to February 7, 2026, infections surged by 600 percent compared to the same period in 2025. Health officials are now urging residents to take precautions and report potential rat breeding sites. In early 2025, the city recorded just one leptospirosis case with no deaths. This year, however, seven cases have been confirmed, including one fatality. The affected areas include Barangays 10, 16, 33, Banago, Mandalagan, Sum-ag, and Taculing, each reporting a single case. Delayed medical attention and denial of exposure are common reasons for severe complications. Residents who have waded in or touched possibly contaminated water or soil are advised to seek preventive treatment immediately. To reduce risks, the public is reminded to manage waste properly and avoid contact with damp, dirty ground. Controlling the rat population is also critical, as rodents spread the bacteria responsible for the disease. The spike in cases highlights the need for better sanitation and public awareness. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation while encouraging residents to follow safety measures. Early medical consultation remains key to preventing serious illness or death.
