Schwallungen's County Road K 84 reopens after €2.5M modern upgrade
A major upgrade to County Road K 84 in Schwallungen has been completed ahead of its reopening on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The 735-metre stretch through Eisenacher Straße received a full rebuild, including fresh surfacing, new pavements, and modern infrastructure. The project also uncovered local historical details through archaeological oversight. The reconstruction of K 84 involved multiple agencies and a total investment of around €2.5 million. The district council managed the roadworks, while the municipality of Schwallungen oversaw sidewalks and street lighting. STRABAG AG, based in Ritschenhausen, carried out the construction under a tight schedule.
Funding came from several sources, with the Free State of Thuringia providing roughly €800,000. The district contributed about €1.1 million, covering planning and execution costs. Additional grants supported KWA’s renewal of drinking water and wastewater pipes, as well as Thuringian Energy Networks’ underground power cabling. The project stayed on budget and on time. Alongside the road and utility upgrades, archaeological monitoring offered new insights into the area’s past.
The revamped section of K 84 will reopen to traffic on June 10, 2026, following months of coordinated work. Improved pavements, a modern bus stop, and upgraded utilities now serve the community. The collaboration between local authorities, contractors, and state funding ensured the project’s success.
