Country to accelerate rail projects with special funds - Schleswig-Holstein fast-tracks 13 stalled rail projects with €200M boost
Schleswig-Holstein is set to accelerate 13 rail projects after securing €200 million in federal funding. The total investment package now reaches €887 million, combining special funds with existing infrastructure budgets. None of these projects had progressed to completion or operation between 2020 and 2023 before the new money was allocated.
The additional €200 million will push forward long-delayed upgrades, including electrification and track expansions. Among the key schemes is the Neumünster–Bad Oldesloe line, which will see both expansion and electrification. Platforms in Elmshorn and Bordesholm are also due for extensions to improve accessibility.
The funding aims to bring forward renovations, line reactivations, and modernisation work that had stalled in recent years. Without this boost, the projects would have remained on hold or progressed at a much slower pace. Authorities now plan to deliver all 13 schemes within the next five years.
With the new funds in place, Schleswig-Holstein expects to complete all 13 rail projects ahead of their original schedules. The upgrades will focus on electrification, capacity increases, and station improvements. The €887 million package marks the largest recent investment in the region's rail network.
