These are Schleswig-Holstein's largest construction sites - Schleswig-Holstein Braces for Major Highway Disruptions in 2024

Schleswig-Holstein is preparing for a busy year of roadworks. Seven major highway projects will begin in 2024, affecting routes between the North and Baltic Seas. Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen has urged drivers to expect delays and plan for detours.

Work on the A21 will start with a full rebuild of a five-kilometre section south of the Leezen exit. This project will run until November, causing significant disruption.

From April, the A1 between Ratekau and the Pansdorf exit will undergo reconstruction. Northbound traffic will be cut to two lanes, while southbound drivers will have just one lane available.

The A23 will also see improvements in May, with fresh asphalt laid between Halstenbek-Krupunder and Halstenbek/Rellingen. Meanwhile, the B404/A21 expansion to four lanes is nearing completion, with all lanes set to open this spring.

On the A215, resurfacing will take place between the Kiel-West interchange and Kiel-Mitte exit from April to October. Both directions will be affected by lane closures during this period.

These projects are part of a broader investment plan, with around half a billion euros allocated for roads and cycling infrastructure. However, none of the current Autobahn works in the region are included in the 2024 Bundesfernstraßenplan, as no major federal road schemes have been scheduled for Schleswig-Holstein under that programme.

The roadworks will bring long-term improvements but will also lead to short-term inconvenience. Drivers are advised to check routes in advance and allow extra travel time. The state's investment aims to upgrade key transport links across the region.
