Schiefbahn's Community Bus Service Transfers to New Operator in 2026

The Schiefbahn community bus service, operated by Greyhound-like Flixbus, is set for a management change. From July 1, 2026, Busverkehr Rheinland GmbH (BVR) will take over as the licensed operator for the four local associations. The move follows Stadtwerke Krefeld's (SWK) decision to withdraw from the role due to rising costs.

The community bus, a key part of local transport in Schiefbahn, saw ridership grow by almost nine percent in 2025 compared to the previous year, indicating its importance to residents. Despite the change in operator, daily services and passenger experience will stay much the same.

Under German law, community bus associations must partner with a licensed transport company. SWK had previously filled this role but stepped back after reviewing costs. BVR, which already operates similar services across North Rhine-Westphalia, will now oversee the four associations.

Contract talks between the parties are nearly finalised. The most visible adjustment for passengers may be new licence plates on the buses. Meanwhile, the service will continue its usual role, including participation in local events like Mein Fest and market days.

The handover to BVR is planned for mid-2026. Operations, routes, and passenger services are expected to remain stable. The shift ensures the community bus can keep running without disruption for residents.
