Saxony Expands Semiconductor Contacts in South Korea - Saxony's 'Silicon Saxony' Courts South Korea for Chip Industry Growth
Saxony's microelectronics hub, known as 'Silicon Saxony,' is pushing to deepen ties with South Korea. The region, already Europe's largest semiconductor cluster, hosted a pre-fair event in Seoul to attract investment and collaboration. Around 70 representatives from South Korean firms, research bodies, and government agencies attended the gathering.
The event in Seoul took place ahead of the Semicon trade fair, where Saxony's economic development agency, WFS, promoted the region as a leading semiconductor location. Major players like Samsung and SK Hynix were among the attendees, highlighting South Korea's role as a global chip powerhouse.
Saxony's microelectronics sector currently employs about 83,000 people across 3,600 companies, with key hubs in Dresden and Chemnitz. The workforce is expected to grow to roughly 100,000 by 2040 as expansion continues. Recent investments include TSMC's new plant in Saxony, alongside ongoing projects at Infineon and Globalfoundries.
WFS has now broadened its focus to include South Korea for future partnerships. While no exact number of active collaborations was given, Saxony-based firms are actively seeking deeper technological and investment ties with South Korean counterparts.
The push for stronger links with South Korea comes as Saxony solidifies its position in the global semiconductor industry. With major expansions underway and a growing workforce, the region aims to leverage international partnerships to drive further growth. The next steps will depend on concrete agreements emerging from these discussions.
