More Tin in Saxony - Re-evaluation of Deposits in Gottesberg - Saxony's Ore Mountains revive as tin mining booms amid soaring prices
The Ore Mountains in Saxony are once again attracting attention as demand for critical raw materials climbs. Rising tin prices and the EU's push for supply-chain independence have sparked renewed interest in the region's mining potential. Companies like Saxore are now accelerating plans to extract tin, a metal vital for electronics and bronze production.
Saxore is focusing first on the Tellerhäuser mine, with long-term investment estimated at €150–200 million per site. The project aims to produce 500,000 tons of tin ore annually, yielding around 2,500 tons of refined tin. A framework operating plan for the deposit is currently under review, with trial operations expected to begin no earlier than 2029.
Meanwhile, the company's latest assessment of the Gottesberg deposit reveals far greater potential than previously believed. Based on 16 drill samples from 2021–2022 and historical mining records, the deposit is now estimated to hold 37 million tons of ore, containing roughly 90,900 tons of economically viable tin. This new figure nearly triples earlier projections.
The surge in tin prices—now exceeding $55,000 per ton, up from under $30,000 a year ago—has strengthened Saxony's mining outlook. Across the Ore Mountains, over 30 exploration and extraction projects for ores and fluorite are underway, according to the State Mining Authority. The region's revival comes as global demand for critical metals grows, and Europe seeks to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
With Saxore's plans advancing and new estimates revealing larger tin reserves, Saxony's mining sector appears poised for expansion. The Tellerhäuser and Gottesberg projects could play a key role in meeting demand for tin, a metal increasingly vital to modern industries. Trial operations at Tellerhäuser are not expected before 2029, but the region's long-term potential is now clearer than ever.
