6.7 Million Euros for Secure Water Supply in Saxony - Saxony invests €6.7 million to secure water supplies amid growing climate risks

The Saxony State Directorate (LDS) has invested €6.7 million over five years to safeguard water supplies across the region. The funding, allocated under the Water Security Act, aims to ensure reliable access to water during emergencies such as droughts or contamination. LDS President Béla Bélafi has stressed that a secure water supply is critical in times of crisis, calling it a matter of life and death.

The initiative focuses on both immediate preparedness and long-term resilience. Projects include upgrades to infrastructure, emergency storage systems, and measures to protect natural water sources. These efforts cover key areas like Leipzig, Dresden, and the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge).

Since 2019, the €6.7 million has funded a range of projects to strengthen Saxony's water security. Emergency water storage tanks have been built, while ageing wells and pumping stations have undergone modernisation. Redundant pipelines and digital monitoring systems have also been installed to prevent supply failures during disasters.

Restoring old raw water extraction sites has been another priority. These upgrades help maintain water quality and availability, even when demand spikes or sources become compromised. The plan, known as the *SachsenTrinkwasserSicherungsplan*, targets high-risk zones where shortages or pollution could hit hardest. Beyond infrastructure, the funds have equipped the region with mobile water transport trailers. These can deliver supplies quickly if local networks fail. Emergency power systems now back up critical facilities, ensuring pumps and treatment plants keep running during blackouts. Environmental protection has played a key role in the strategy. Efforts to shield waterways from pollution and overuse help sustain long-term supply. The measures also reduce risks from extreme weather, such as prolonged droughts or sudden flooding that could disrupt services.

The five-year investment has bolstered Saxony's ability to handle water crises. Residents and businesses now benefit from upgraded infrastructure, backup systems, and stricter environmental safeguards. With these improvements in place, the region aims to maintain a stable water supply—even under the most challenging conditions.
