Saxony has strengthened its position as Germany's leading pea producer, accounting for over half of the nation's output in 2025. The state also saw a significant rise in open-field vegetable farming, with yields climbing by seven percent compared to the previous year.
In 2025, Germany produced 16,484 tons of peas, with Saxony contributing 7,960 tons—nearly 53 percent of the total. The Meißen district led the region in open-field farming, covering 1,032 hectares. Overall, Saxony's open-field vegetable cultivation reached 31,721 tons, marking a seven percent increase from 2024.
Onions were the most harvested crop in the state, with 11,893 tons collected. Peas followed as the second-largest yield. Meanwhile, organic vegetable farmland in Saxony expanded by 40 percent, reaching 828 hectares. Under protective cover, cucumbers and tomatoes dominated production, with 838 tons and 421 tons harvested respectively. Nationally, ecological vegetable farming grew by 6.4 percent, covering 20,600 hectares. The largest open-field vegetable areas were found in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Bavaria, and Rhineland-Palatinate.
Saxony's agricultural sector showed strong growth in 2025, particularly in pea and onion production. The expansion of organic farming and increased yields highlight the region's role in Germany's vegetable market. These figures reflect both local and national trends in sustainable and high-volume cultivation.
