Water Base Fees Significantly Increased - Saxony-Anhalt's water bills surge 20% in three years as infrastructure upgrades bite
Households in Saxony-Anhalt are facing sharply higher water bills. Over the past three years, the combined basecamp fees for drinking water and wastewater have climbed by nearly €47. The latest figures show no sign of costs levelling off soon.
The steady rise in water expenses has hit residents hard. In 2022, the average annual cost for water and wastewater stood at €234.90. By 2025, that figure had jumped to €281.49—a near 20% increase in just three years.
Prices for drinking water alone have also surged. Between 2022 and 2023, the consumption-based rate rose by 14.2%, reaching €2.01 per cubic metre. This follows a longer trend: since 2011, water prices in the state have soared by almost 25% on average.
Authorities point to infrastructure upgrades as the main driver behind the hikes. Additional investments in pipelines, treatment plants, and maintenance are pushing costs upward. These improvements, while necessary, are now being passed on to consumers.
The latest data confirms a clear upward trend in water and wastewater charges. With base fees and consumption rates both rising, households will pay significantly more than in previous years. The increases reflect ongoing efforts to modernise ageing systems—but also place a heavier burden on residents' budgets.
