Fewer buildings demolished or repurposed in Saxony-Anhalt - Saxony-Anhalt's building demolitions and conversions hit a five-year low in 2024

Saxony-Anhalt saw fewer buildings demolished or repurposed in 2024. Official figures show around 525 structures were altered last year, marking a noticeable drop compared to previous years. The latest data reveals a 7.7 percent decline in demolitions and conversions from 2023, with an overall reduction of 35.6 percent since 2020. Most of the affected buildings dated from before 1919 or were constructed between 1949 and 1978.

In total, about 195,400 square metres of residential and usable floor space were impacted in 2024. The districts of Harz and Salzlandkreis experienced higher-than-average activity, with 63 and 72 buildings altered respectively. No specific local policies or regional factors have been identified to explain the sharp decline in recent years.

General measures, such as extending deadlines for repurposing agricultural buildings from seven to ten years, exist but lack direct links to the observed drop. Available sources do not provide clear reasons for the trend in Saxony-Anhalt.

The decline in demolitions and conversions continues a pattern seen since 2020. Last year's figures reflect a significant reduction in structural changes across the region. The total affected area now stands at nearly 200,000 square metres.
