Samyang Foods Opens Plant-Based Food R&D Hub in the Netherlands
Samyang Foods is launching a new research and development hub in Wageningen, Netherlands. The facility will focus on plant-based and functional foods, tapping into the region's strong food tech expertise. Unlike a local subsidiary, it will operate as an overseas research base for the South Korean company.
The Dutch government aims for a 50-50 split between plant-based and animal-derived protein consumption by 2030, making the country an ideal location for such innovation.
The company selected Wageningen for its academic and industrial networks in food technology. The hub will prioritise research on plant proteins and other cutting-edge solutions for healthier plant-based products. Activities will include tech scouting, joint research, material testing, talent recruitment, and trend analysis.
Initially, the hub will function as an exploratory unit with a flexible structure, allowing for future expansion. It currently employs seven staff members, with plans to grow to 15. The facility will work closely with Samyang Foods Europe, a sales subsidiary established in Amsterdam in 2024.
The Netherlands was chosen for its leadership in food tech and supportive policy environment. While Wageningen University & Research has fostered startups in agri- and food technology, no public data specifies the exact number founded between 2021 and 2026.
The new R&D hub will strengthen Samyang Foods' presence in Europe's plant-based food sector. By collaborating with local expertise, the company aims to develop more functional and sustainable food solutions. The facility's flexible structure allows for adjustments as research and market needs evolve.
