Sacramento's U.S. 50 onramp shuts for emergency weekend repairs

A major onramp to U.S. Highway 50 in Sacramento closed for urgent repairs over the weekend. The Stockton Boulevard entrance to westbound U.S. 50 shut from 10 p.m. on May 15 until 4 a.m. on May 18, causing delays for drivers. The work is part of a wider 11-day project to improve the highway.

Caltrans began the repairs on Friday evening, focusing on the bridge approach slab near the onramp. The closure forced westbound drivers to take a detour: heading east on U.S. 50, exiting at 65th Street, and re-entering the westbound route.

The project also includes a 55-hour lane reduction on westbound U.S. 50, starting at 9 p.m. on May 15. Crews are repairing joints at two bridge hinges, which has limited traffic to fewer lanes. During the day, two right lanes and the auxiliary lane remain closed, while a third right lane shuts overnight. This work is part of a larger Caltrans scheme to rehabilitate 53 lane miles of pavement. The plan also adds 14 lane miles of high-occupancy vehicle lanes between the U.S. 50/Interstate 5 interchange and the U.S. 50/Watt Avenue interchange.

The onramp reopened early on May 18 after the slab repairs finished. However, lane restrictions on westbound U.S. 50 will continue as part of the ongoing 11-day project. Drivers in the area should expect further delays until the work completes.
