Sabah targets 4 million visitors in 2023 with bold tourism revamp

Sabah is pushing to become a top-tier travel destination. The state aims to attract four million visitors in 2023 by expanding its tourism appeal and improving flight connections. Efforts include larger promotions of cultural festivals and stronger crisis management in the sector. The Kaamatan festival, a key cultural event, will receive wider promotion this year. Celebrations will run throughout May, with some activities extending into June. This move aligns with Sabah's goal to showcase its heritage and community experiences.

Sabah's tourism relies heavily on domestic travellers, who make up around 60% of arrivals. China remains the leading international market, with over 130,000 visitors recorded in March 2023 alone. The state is also targeting North and Southeast Asian tourists while navigating global travel challenges. To support growth, Sabah has secured 16 direct international flight routes. Despite geopolitical tensions and long-haul disruptions, no major cancellations have been reported—only minor delays. The Sabah Tourism Board is now setting up a crisis response unit to handle future uncertainties more effectively. Looking ahead, Sabah is refining its brand for Visit Sabah 2027. The focus will be on cultural diversity, nature-based tourism, and authentic local experiences to draw high-end visitors.

Sabah's tourism strategy combines festival promotions, improved air links, and crisis preparedness. The state expects steady growth, with domestic and Chinese travellers leading the way. The new crisis unit and premium positioning aim to secure long-term stability in the sector.
