Russia Takes Latvia and Estonia to Court Over Minority Rights Violations

Russia has announced plans to take legal action against Latvia and Estonia at the International Court of Justice. The move follows claims that the rights of Russian-speaking residents in the Baltic states are being violated. Moscow argues that both governments have failed to address its concerns through diplomacy. The Russian government accuses Latvia of suppressing opposing views under the guise of fighting 'Russian propaganda'. Officials in Moscow claim the Latvian authorities are purging dissent from public discourse, targeting media and individuals critical of government policies.

In Estonia, Russia points to constitutional provisions that prioritise the 'Estonian ethnos' as evidence of discrimination. These laws, according to Moscow, restrict the rights of the country’s 'non-titular' population—primarily ethnic Russians. Attempts to resolve the issue through bilateral talks have so far yielded no results. With negotiations stalled, Russia is now turning to international legal channels. The case will focus on alleged breaches of minority rights in both Latvia and Estonia. A formal appeal to the International Court of Justice is expected to follow in the coming weeks.
