Russia's pulse exports skyrocket in 2023, doubling global shipments
Russia's pulse industry saw major growth in 2023, with exports soaring to record levels. Between January and November, the country shipped over 3.2 million tons abroad—more than double the previous year's figure. A sharp rise in production and strong demand from key markets drove the increase. The harvest in 2023 expanded by 29%, bringing total output close to 6 million tons. This boost allowed Russia to significantly increase its overseas sales.
Peas dominated the trade, making up 77% of all pulse exports. China alone imported nearly 2.5 million tons, cementing its position as the largest buyer. Spain also ramped up purchases, buying 599,000 tons—a 27-fold jump from 2022.
Chickpeas followed as the second-biggest export, with shipments rising 2.3 times to 489,000 tons. Turkey became the top importer of Russian chickpeas, taking in 233,000 tons. Lentils, though smaller in volume, still saw strong growth, with exports climbing 2.9-fold to 268,000 tons.
The value of these shipments also doubled over the same period in 2022. Overall, pulse exports increased 2.5 times compared to the previous year. Russia's pulse sector has rapidly expanded its global reach. With higher production and rising demand, exports hit new highs in 2023. The trend suggests continued growth in key markets like China, Turkey, and Spain.
