Russia's motor oil and lubricant prices surge amid global supply chain strain

Russia is facing higher costs for motor oil additives and automotive lubricants from early April. The price rises follow global oil market shifts and ongoing supply chain pressures. Other petrochemical products, from antifreeze to industrial fluids, are also becoming more expensive. The conflict in the Middle East has disrupted supply chains for key motor oil components. Logistical delays and stock shortages among manufacturers are now pushing prices up further. Russian oil firms have adjusted their rates in response to global market changes, adding to the upward pressure.

Prices for base motor oils and additives may climb by 5–15%, according to the Russian Union of Auto Service Providers. Despite potential supply chain issues, analysts do not expect a sudden spike in additive costs. The broader economic strain is also affecting other sectors, including chemicals used in antifreeze and automotive fluids.

Over the past year, global crude oil prices had generally fallen, with Brent forecasts for 2025 averaging around 66.5 USD per barrel. Weak demand from China and increased supply from OPEC+ and non-OPEC producers like the US contributed to this trend. However, recent comparisons show heating oil prices in mid-March 2024 were significantly lower than those projected for March 2026.

Russia's push for a fully domestic production chain for base oils and additives remains a priority. Officials see this as essential for securing technological independence in the automotive sector. The price increases will take effect in early April, affecting both consumers and businesses. Motor oil additives and related chemicals will cost more due to supply chain constraints and oil market volatility. Long-term stability may depend on Russia's ability to develop its own production capabilities.
