Russia cancels $420M in regional debts to ease budget strains
The Russian government has cleared 37.5 billion rubles in budget loan debts for six regions. Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin approved the measure, wiping out two-thirds of each region’s outstanding obligations. The move follows an established debt relief programme used for several years. The directive, signed by Mishustin, targets specific regions struggling with budget loan repayments. Khabarovsk Krai received the largest write-off at 6.55 billion rubles. The Republic of Sakha, also known as Yakutia, saw 4.32 billion rubles forgiven.
Omsk Oblast’s debt was reduced by 499 million rubles. Kurgan Oblast had 1.91 billion rubles wiped out, while Vladimir Oblast’s relief totalled 561 million rubles. The scheme covers two-thirds of each region’s existing budget loan debt, easing their financial burdens. This debt relief mechanism has been used before and is considered effective. The government has repeatedly applied it to support regional budgets under pressure.
The total debt cancellation reaches 37.5 billion rubles across the six regions. Each now faces a lighter repayment load, with two-thirds of their budget loans erased. The decision follows a pattern of targeted financial support from the federal government.
