Russia accelerates Far Eastern gas pipeline to China for 2027 launch

Russia is moving forward with a major gas pipeline project to supply China. The Far Eastern route, set to carry up to 10 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually, is now under active development. Officials confirm that preparations are on track for deliveries to begin in early 2027. The project took a key step in 2024 when Russia’s state expert review agency, Glavgosexpertiza, approved its implementation. This followed a bilateral agreement signed in February 2022, securing gas deliveries for at least 25 years.

The pipeline’s cross-border section will stretch beneath the Ussuri River, connecting Dalnerechensk in Russia with Hulin in China. Construction of this infrastructure is governed by an intergovernmental agreement between the two nations.

Recent progress includes the start of equipment installation at the Dalnerechensk gas metering station. Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller confirmed that all preparations remain on schedule for gas to begin flowing by late January 2027. Once operational, the pipeline will significantly increase Russia’s gas exports to China. The Far Eastern route is designed to deliver a steady supply of 10 billion cubic metres each year. Both countries continue to coordinate on the final stages before the planned launch.
