Ruhr Motorway Church closes forever after decades of solace for travelers

The Ruhr Motorway Church, a long-standing refuge for travellers and a memorial for road accident victims, will close its doors for good this Memorial Day weekend. For years, the church offered a quiet space for reflection, but its final day will mark the end of an era for the local community and visitors alike.

The church operated within a parish whose building was sold to a private buyer, stripping it of its consecrated status. Around 15 people stopped by daily, seeking solace or a moment of rest. Its prominent 'Komm zur Ruhe' banner, visible from the A40 motorway, became a familiar sight for passing drivers.

Over time, the church grew into a meaningful memorial for road accident victims in Bochum and the surrounding region. It also hosted special events, including an annual bikers' gathering on the Day of Motorway Churches. Plans to expand it into a dedicated memorial site for traffic victims were underway but have now been abandoned due to the sale.

On Saturday morning, a farewell gathering will take place for the volunteers who supported the church's mission. The church's signs and banners will be removed, marking the final step in its closure. The identity of the private buyer remains unknown, and no new plans for the site have been announced.

With the closure of the Ruhr Motorway Church, a place of remembrance and rest for travellers will disappear. The building's sale has halted plans for a traffic victim memorial, leaving the future of the site uncertain. The farewell event will serve as a final opportunity for the community to honour its legacy.
