Rhine Valley Railway's 250 km/h upgrade transforms key European route

The Rhine Valley Railway has completed a major upgrade between Müllheim and Auggen. The expansion, finished on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, now allows trains to reach speeds of up to 250 km/h. The project aims to improve punctuality and increase capacity on this key route. Construction crews have added two new tracks alongside the existing lines, creating a four-track section over roughly six kilometres. This reduces bottlenecks and makes operations smoother for both passenger and freight services. The railway is part of a wider European corridor linking Germany to Italy.

Twelve bridges were either built or widened, while around eight kilometres of noise barriers were installed. Müllheim (Markgräflerland) station and Auggen halt have also been fully upgraded to ensure accessibility for all passengers. An electronic signal box and new switch connections were introduced to improve flexibility. The modernised infrastructure supports faster, more reliable journeys and helps stabilise timetables across the network.

The completed expansion brings faster travel and greater reliability to the Rhine Valley Railway. With higher speeds and increased capacity, the route now plays a stronger role in connecting European freight networks. Passengers and operators will benefit from the upgraded infrastructure in the years ahead.
