Regional Trains: More Seats on the Cottbus-Leipzig Line - RE10 train line expands with double seating to combat weekend crowds

The RE10 train line between Leipzig and Cottbus is getting a major boost in seating capacity. Demand on weekends has surged for years, often leaving services packed. Now, authorities are taking steps to ease overcrowding with extra trains and more seats.

For some time, passengers on the RE10 line have faced crowded carriages, particularly on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The route, connecting Leipzig and Cottbus, has seen steadily rising numbers, with trains often reaching full capacity.

In response, a second daily connection was introduced in Falkenberg (Elster) as part of the December 2025 timetable update. This change created an hourly service, linking the RE10 with the RB43 and S4 lines for smoother travel.

From 6 March 2026, selected weekend and holiday services will run with two coupled train units instead of one. This adjustment doubles seating from 180 to 360 per trip. The expansion is jointly funded by the states of Brandenburg and Saxony.

The upgrades aim to relieve pressure on busy weekend services. With more frequent connections and double the seating, passengers can expect fewer overcrowded journeys. The changes will take full effect by early 2026.
