Public Transport Faces Seven-Day Shutdown Over Fuel Cost Crisis
Public transport in the region faces a funding crisis due to soaring fuel costs. Authorities have warned that bus services could be suspended for up to seven days during national holidays if no extra money is provided. The government is now reviewing the situation before deciding on further financial support.
Rising fuel prices have left public transport operators with an unexpected shortfall of around €4 million. This increase was not accounted for in last year’s budgets, leaving services struggling to cover costs. Fuel alone makes up about 25 percent of total operating expenses.
The state-owned transport company IIL has already reduced its budget by €400,000. If no additional funding arrives, another €400,000 in cuts may be necessary. Regional transport centres have also warned of partial service suspensions unless fuel costs are offset. Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi has acknowledged the issue but delayed a decision on extra funding until autumn. The government has asked for more detailed financial data before committing to further support. Officials have stressed that future budgets should better account for fuel price fluctuations to avoid similar crises.
Without an extra €4.2 million in state funding, bus services could face disruptions. The government’s final decision will come in the autumn, leaving transport operators in limbo for now. Any cuts or suspensions would directly affect passengers relying on public transport.
