£8 Billion Penn Station Overhaul Unveiled With 165% More Commuter Space
New renderings for an £8 billion overhaul of New York’s Penn Station were revealed on Monday. The project promises to transform the ageing train hub, which serves 650,000 daily commuters, into a brighter and more spacious facility. The renovation will remove the theatre attached to Madison Square Garden, creating room for a vastly expanded concourse. Current commuter space sits at 65,000 square feet, but the redesign will increase this to 170,000 square feet—a 165% boost. The plan also includes a grand new entrance on Eighth Avenue and the replacement of cramped underground areas with naturally lit, open spaces.
Amtrak’s Andy Byford, formerly head of New York City Transit, joined officials to present the design. Funding for the project was secured by Governor Kathy Hochul, with support from President Trump. The Dolans, who own Madison Square Garden, will receive an undisclosed payment for the theatre’s removal. Construction is expected to start in 2027 and take around six years. Despite the scale of the work, officials have confirmed no fare increases or surcharges for commuters. President Trump has suggested naming the new station after himself, though organisers have not addressed the proposal.
The renovation aims to ease congestion and improve the experience for hundreds of thousands of daily passengers. With funding in place and a timeline set, the project now moves toward its 2027 start date. The final design will replace outdated infrastructure with a modern, more accessible station.
