Prasarana unveils recovery plan to fix Kelana Jaya LRT's chronic failures
Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has submitted a detailed recovery plan to the Transport Ministry to tackle ongoing issues on the Kelana Jaya LRT line. The move follows repeated technical failures that have disrupted services for years. Over 3,200 staff are now on duty during the Aidilfitri holidays to ensure smooth operations and passenger safety.
The Kelana Jaya line, operational since 1998, has faced more than 50 major incidents, including signal breakdowns, power cuts, and track faults. In 2024 alone, 12 significant stoppages were recorded, prompting urgent action from authorities.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke ordered an investigation into the line's persistent problems earlier this year. He directed the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to examine the causes and instructed Prasarana to develop a clear recovery strategy.
Prasarana's CEO, Amir Hamdan, presented the plan during a post-cabinet meeting. The proposal focuses on specific technical upgrades and improvements to customer experience. It also strengthens reporting protocols, with updates provided every 24 hours, seven days, and 21 days to APAD. APAD continues to monitor Prasarana's operations closely. The agency receives real-time updates on incidents and corrective measures. Meanwhile, the company has deployed extra personnel to maintain service reliability during the festive period, addressing both technical risks and passenger needs.
The recovery plan aims to reduce future disruptions on one of Kuala Lumpur's busiest transit routes. With stricter oversight and enhanced reporting, authorities hope to restore confidence in the Kelana Jaya line's reliability. The next steps will depend on the plan's implementation and ongoing coordination between Prasarana and APAD.
