Plug Power shifts focus to grid electricity after rare profit milestone
Plug Power has reported a 12.9% rise in revenue for fiscal 2025, reaching approximately $710 million. The increase came mainly from stronger equipment sales, marking a rare positive shift for the company. Despite ongoing financial challenges, the firm also recorded its first positive gross profit in years during the last quarter of 2025.
The company is now adjusting its strategy, moving away from hydrogen production to focus on supplying electricity directly to the grid—particularly for AI data centres. This shift comes as Plug Power aims to secure its financial footing after years of heavy losses.
Plug Power's financial struggles remain significant, with operating losses totalling around $1.5 billion. In 2025 alone, cash outflow from operations reached approximately $535.8 million. However, the company achieved a small but notable milestone in the fourth quarter of 2025, posting a gross profit of $5.5 million—its first in years.
To improve liquidity, Plug Power is selling its 'Project Gateway' site in New York to Stream Data Centers for $132.5 million. The deal, expected to close by June 30, 2026, is part of a broader plan to raise over $275 million. Meanwhile, the company has set ambitious financial targets, projecting positive adjusted EBITDA by the end of 2026, positive operating income by 2027, and full profitability by 2028.
Under new leadership, Plug Power is also changing direction. José Luis Crespo, who took over as CEO in early March 2026 after serving as president and chief revenue officer, is steering the company toward grid electricity supply. The firm plans to deliver up to 250 megawatts of hydrogen-based power to the PJM Interconnection grid in the U.S. No further details have been released about additional capacity beyond this project.
The company continues to face legal challenges, including multiple class-action lawsuits. Investors allege misrepresentations related to a Department of Energy loan, adding to the pressure as Plug Power works to stabilise its finances and refocus its business model.
Plug Power's recent revenue growth and first positive gross profit in years suggest cautious progress. The sale of its New York site and shift toward grid electricity supply signal a strategic pivot under new leadership. Yet, with ongoing lawsuits and a long path to profitability, the company's financial recovery will depend on meeting its ambitious targets in the coming years.
