Philippines closes voter registration for 2026 Barangay elections with 5.4M applicants

The voter registration period for the November 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) officially closed on May 18, 2026. By the deadline, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) had processed 5,470,889 applications, though some individuals reported difficulties in completing their registrations on time. Comelec spokesperson John Rex Garcia reminded the public that voter registration for the May 2028 national and local elections will reopen in February 2027. The upcoming registration window will remain open until September 2027, giving eligible voters several months to sign up.

Garcia also addressed a recurring issue: many Filipinos tend to wait until the final day to register. This habit often leads to overcrowding and delays, leaving some unable to complete the process. The Comelec has repeatedly urged citizens to register early to avoid last-minute complications. Despite efforts to accommodate everyone, the commission stressed that late registrations create logistical challenges. Those who missed the 2026 deadline will have another opportunity in 2027 to secure their voting rights for the next elections.

The next voter registration period begins in February 2027 and runs until September of the same year. The Comelec continues to encourage early registration to prevent bottlenecks. Eligible voters who missed the 2026 cutoff will need to register during this window to participate in the 2028 polls.
