Perak police launch anti-fraud training as student scams surge past RM300,000

Perak police have raised concerns over a sharp rise in online fraud targeting university students. Between January and April 2023, 61 cases were reported, with total losses reaching RM303,372.36. Authorities have now launched a new initiative to tackle the growing problem. The state’s police chief, Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin, introduced a module on Current Trends of Commercial Crimes at Universiti Teknologi Petronas. The programme focuses on educating students about the latest scam tactics and how to avoid falling victim.

Scammers have been using various methods to deceive students, including fake phone calls, bogus e-commerce deals, fraudulent investment schemes, and loan offers. Police data shows that young adults in higher education have become the primary targets for these crimes in Perak.

The newly launched module aims to boost awareness among students, helping them recognise red flags and take preventive measures. Authorities hope the training will reduce financial losses and protect vulnerable groups from exploitation. With 61 reported cases and losses exceeding RM300,000 in just four months, the initiative comes at a critical time. The module will equip students with the knowledge to identify scams and report suspicious activity. Police will continue monitoring trends to adapt their prevention strategies.
