Pāpāmoa East Interchange opens to cut commutes by 30 minutes

The new Pāpāmoa East Interchange is set to open at the end of the month after two years of construction. The $98 million project promises to slash travel times for thousands of commuters in Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty region. Teachers and residents have already welcomed the changes, with some expecting their daily journeys to be cut by up to 30 minutes. Work on the interchange began in July 2022, creating an overbridge across the Tauranga Eastern Link and State Highway 2. The project also included new on and off ramps, a link to The Sands Avenue, and upgraded Three Waters infrastructure. Until now, drivers have faced delays due to lowered speed limits and construction traffic.

A blessing ceremony took place on March 30, marking the project's completion before its official public opening. The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi covered 51% of the costs, while Tauranga City Council funded most of the remaining amount through development contributions. The interchange was designed to support Pāpāmoa's growing population, which is expected to reach around 40,000 by 2043. It will provide faster routes between Pāpāmoa East, Tauranga city centre, Mount Maunganui, and other nearby areas. The Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road, already in operation, charges light vehicles $2.30 and heavy vehicles $5.60, using electronic tolling without booths. Teachers at Golden Sands School have already noticed the benefits. Liana Rosie said her daily commute would be halved, saving at least 15 minutes each way. Another teacher, Melissa Burgess, expects a similar reduction in travel time.

The interchange will open to the public by the end of March, easing congestion and speeding up journeys. Commuters in Tauranga and Pāpāmoa will see shorter travel times, while the project supports the area's long-term growth. The toll road's cashless system and flat fees will also streamline trips for drivers across the region.
