Four-year contract: Opel joins Formula E - Opel races into Formula E with all-electric Gen4 debut in 2026
Opel is set to join Formula E as a full manufacturer team from next season. The German carmaker will compete under the name Opel GSE Formula E Team, with GSE standing for Grand Sport Electric. This move marks a major step into electric motorsport for the brand.
The company's entry follows a four-year agreement signed by Opel CEO Florian Huettl. Before the full debut, the team will take part in the two German rounds at Berlin's Tempelhof Airport on May 2 and 3 this year.
From the 2026/2027 season, Opel will race the new Gen4 car. This model boasts over 340 horsepower more than its predecessor, reaching up to 816 horsepower. It will also feature permanent all-wheel drive, a first for the series.
Opel already has experience in electric motorsport. In 2021, the brand launched the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup, the world's first manufacturer-backed electric rally series.
The team's arrival in Formula E expands Opel's presence in competitive electric racing. With the Gen4 car's increased power and all-wheel drive, the manufacturer aims to make an immediate impact. The Berlin rounds in May will serve as an early test before the full campaign begins next season.
