Old smartphones could turn into fire hazards over time

Old smartphones left unused for years could become a fire hazard. The risk comes from degraded lithium-ion batteries, which worsen over time. Experts warn that improper storage or disposal can lead to dangerous situations. The Institute for Loss Prevention has highlighted how aging, heat, and cold damage lithium-ion batteries. Over time, these factors increase the chance of overheating or even fires. Storing batteries with a charge between 40 and 60 percent helps reduce risks. A dry environment, kept between 0 and 45 degrees Celsius, is also recommended.

Regularly checking and recharging old batteries prevents deep discharge, which can cause permanent damage. Simply throwing away electronic devices in household waste creates further dangers. Fires can break out during waste processing, and valuable raw materials go to waste. Before selling or recycling a smartphone, resetting it to factory settings is essential. This step protects personal data from falling into the wrong hands. Old batteries and devices can be taken to local recycling centres or designated collection points. In Germany, electronics retailers, dealers, and larger supermarkets must accept old devices for free recycling.

Proper handling of old smartphones and batteries reduces fire risks and conserves resources. Recycling at approved locations ensures safe disposal and material recovery. Following storage guidelines also extends battery life and prevents hazards.
