Ohio's Senate race heats up as Brown challenges Husted in November showdown

Ohio’s Senate race is set for a high-stakes showdown this November. Former senator Sherrod Brown will challenge incumbent Jon Husted, who was appointed to the seat last year. The contest follows Brown’s narrow loss in 2024 and Husted’s first defence of the position since taking office. Sherrod Brown secured his party’s nomination on Tuesday night, while Husted ran unopposed in the Republican primary. Brown, who lost his 2024 re-election bid by less than four percentage points, has mounted a strong financial push. In the first quarter alone, he raised $10.1 million—more than triple Husted’s $2.9 million.

Heading into the primary, Brown held $17 million in campaign funds, compared to Husted’s $8.1 million. The financial gap reflects the race’s intensity, with the Senate Leadership Fund already reserving $79 million for Ohio advertising. Analysts expect this contest to become one of the most expensive Senate races of the cycle. Husted, appointed in 2024, now faces his first electoral test. Brown, a seasoned campaigner, is aiming for a political comeback after his defeat to GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno two years ago.

The November election will decide whether Husted retains his appointed seat or Brown reclaims a Senate role. With record spending and a tight margin in 2024, the race is poised to draw national attention. Both campaigns are gearing up for a fierce battle in the coming months.
