Nvidia repurposes Blackwell chips to clear excess RTX stock

Nvidia has started using its Blackwell GB205 GPU in more graphics cards than initially planned. The chip was first introduced in the GeForce RTX 5070 desktop and RTX 5070 Ti Laptop models. Now, reports suggest it may also appear in lower-tier options like the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti due to excess rtx stock.

The move comes after some GB205 chips failed to meet the performance standards for the higher-end 5070 series. Instead of going unused, these chips could be repurposed for mid-range GPUs.

The GB205 was originally designed for Nvidia's RTX 5070 desktop GPU, which features 6,144 shaders, 12 GB of GDDR7 memory, a 192-bit bus, and a 250 W TDP. A laptop version, the RTX 5070 Ti, also uses the same chip but with slightly reduced specs: 5,888 shaders, the same 12 GB GDDR7 memory, and a 192-bit bus, though with a lower 140 W TDP.

However, not all GB205 chips meet the requirements for these high-end models. Some underperforming units remain in stock, prompting Nvidia to explore alternative uses. The solution may involve reconfiguring the chip for the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti, which traditionally rely on the smaller GB206 GPU.

To adapt the GB205 for these mid-range cards, Nvidia can disable two of its 32-bit memory controllers, reducing its bus width to match the GB206. This adjustment would allow the chip to function effectively in the RTX 5060 series, even though its shader count exceeds what the 60-series typically requires.

The shift suggests Nvidia is optimizing its supply chain by repurposing excess chips rather than letting them go to waste. It also indicates that the GB205 was not being used to its full potential in the original RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti models.

The repurposing of the GB205 for the RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti would help Nvidia clear surplus nvidia stock while maintaining performance standards. By adjusting the memory bus, the chip can fit into lower-tier GPUs without major redesigns. This strategy ensures fewer wasted components and a more efficient production process.
