Nuremberg's public transport operator, VAG, has announced major upgrades for 2026. The work includes extensive maintenance, modernisation, and the expansion of the city's tram network. Many of the planned projects aim to improve long-term services while minimising disruption for passengers. Since late March, VAG has been upgrading tracks and overhead lines along Allersberger Straße. This project will continue until 2027, forming part of a broader push to modernise ageing infrastructure. Many facilities in the tram system have reached the end of their service life, requiring urgent attention.

The expansion plans include two new tram sections by 2026. Line 7 will extend to Stadtpark in southern Nuremberg, with completion expected in late 2026. Meanwhile, a new section in the Lichtenreuth district will run to Bauernfeindstraße, with construction set to begin next year. These additions aim to create more direct connections across the city.

To reduce inconvenience, VAG is scheduling much of the work during quieter periods, such as the summer holidays. Maintenance on Ostendstraße will take place then, while improvements along Frankenstraße are planned for autumn. Despite these efforts, some routes will face temporary disruptions, with replacement buses operating where needed. The upgrades will enhance Nuremberg's public transport network by adding new routes and improving existing infrastructure. While construction may cause short-term delays, the changes are designed to provide faster and more reliable services in the long run. VAG has stressed that careful planning will help keep disruptions to a minimum.
