Construction work on the Nürnberg-Regensburg line is progressing - Nuremberg-Regensburg railway line nears completion after major upgrades

Major upgrades to the railway line between Nuremberg and Regensburg are nearing completion. German Rail has spent six weeks replacing tracks, points, and overhead lines as part of a large-scale modernisation effort. The project, which began in February 2023, is set to finish by July 10.

Workers have already installed over 20 new overhead line masts and laid more than 1,000 foundations for additional structures. The team has also renewed over 60 kilometres of track bed, 15 kilometres of rail, and 32 sets of points. Project manager Lucas Griep confirmed that the work remains on schedule and is progressing as planned.

Up to 2,000 specialists and around 80 large machines operate daily along the route. While the project continues, a replacement bus service—using over 90 buses across eight routes—has overcome early delays and is now running smoothly. Passengers can track buses in real time through a dedicated website.

Regular train services will return once the modernisation is complete. The upgrades aim to improve reliability and capacity on the busy Nuremberg-Regensburg line.

The final phase of the project will wrap up by July 10, 2023. Once finished, the line will reopen for normal train operations. Passengers can expect improved infrastructure and fewer disruptions in the long term.
