Nuevo León Governor Samuel García faces potential political trial over corruption claims

A political trial against Nuevo León Governor Samuel García may soon begin. The dispute is the latest in a long-running clash between the governor and the state Congress, dominated by the PRI and PAN parties. Tensions between García and lawmakers have persisted since he took office in October 2021. Conflicts have centred on the state budget, appointments, debt authorisation, and vetoes. In 2023, a crisis erupted when García sought a temporary leave to run for the presidency.

Anabel Alcocer, Morena’s state leader, recently accused García of diverting public funds to benefit Movimiento Ciudadano during the 2024 elections. The State Anti-Corruption Commission will review her request on Friday. If lawmakers find grounds for a trial, García will receive formal notice and have five business days to respond.

Both sides have filed constitutional disputes, deepening the institutional strain. Congress is now preparing for a potential legal showdown, even as García focuses on 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations. If the trial proceeds, Congress will vote in a full session. Judicial authorities would then decide on sanctions, which could include removal from office and a ban on holding public positions. The case marks one of the most serious institutional challenges of García’s term.
